Our Puppy Process

Finding Your German Shorthaired Pointer or Vizsla Puppy

Bringing home a puppy should be exciting, not confusing.

At Nosam Kennels, our puppy placement process helps us get to know you, answer your questions, and thoughtfully match you with a German Shorthaired Pointer or Vizsla puppy that fits your home, lifestyle, and goals.

You don't need to have everything figured out before contacting us. If you're deciding between a GSP and Vizsla, wondering which upcoming litter may be the best fit, or simply have questions about our GSP & Vizsla breeding program, we're happy to talk with you first.

1. Talk With Us

Have questions or aren't sure which breed or litter is right for you? Start with a conversation.

Tell us what you're looking for and what life with your future dog might look like. If you're looking for a hunting dog, tell us how you hunt or what you'd like to learn. If you're interested in hunt tests, NAVHDA, showing, dog sports, or simply want an active family companion, we want to hear about that too. This is also our opportunity to make sure we're a good fit for each other before you're asked to fill out an application or send a deposit.

2. Ready to Join Our Waiting List?

Once we've talked and we're both comfortable moving forward, you're ready to complete our Puppy Placement Application and place your $600 reservation deposit. Our application is for families ready to commit to a Nosam puppy, not for someone still researching or deciding whether our program is right for them. The application gives us more information about your household, lifestyle, preferences, and goals that we'll use when making puppy matches later.

3. Reserve Your Puppy

Your $600 non-refundable reservation deposit secures your place with Nosam Kennels and is applied toward your puppy's total purchase price. Your reservation secures your approved sex preference and, when applicable, color preference, but you are not choosing an individual puppy at this stage. We don't use a traditional first-pick, second-pick system. As the litter grows, we get to know each puppy and ultimately match puppies based on temperament, personality, structure, development, and each family's goals.

4. More Than a Weekly Puppy Picture

We want our families to understand what is happening during these important first weeks—not just see how cute the puppies are.

Our updates give you a window into their development and may include:

• New photos and videos as the litter grows

• Individual puppy introductions

• Weekly developmental milestones

• Behind-the-scenes looks at our puppy-raising program

• Early crate and independence work

• Outdoor exploration and confidence building

• Retrieving and bird-dog development

• Age-appropriate bird exposure

• Updates as personalities and natural tendencies begin to emerge

• Preparation for evaluations, matching, and go-home day

By the time you arrive to pick up your puppy, you won't feel like you're meeting the litter for the first time. You’ve been watching them grow right along with us.

5. Puppy Matching

Around eight weeks, we use what we've learned about the puppies—and what we've learned about you—to make our final puppy matches.

Rather than asking families to choose a puppy from a photograph at only a few weeks old, we consider each puppy as an individual and use our observations and evaluations to help determine where that puppy is most likely to thrive.

6. Bring Your Puppy Home

Our GSP and Vizsla puppies generally begin going home on the first scheduled pickup weekend after they reach eight weeks old.

We'll provide the information you need ahead of time so you can prepare for your puppy's arrival.

And once your puppy leaves our home, we're still here whenever you need us.

7. Stay Connected After Go-Home Day

The updates don't have to end when puppies leave Nosam.

Nosam families can join our private Facebook community, where owners can stay connected, share updates, follow littermates, celebrate accomplishments, ask questions, and learn from other families raising dogs from the same breeding program.

For many families, one of the best parts is watching not only their own puppy grow, but also seeing where their littermates go and what they accomplish.

You Don't Have to Be an Experienced GSP or Vizsla Owner

You don't need to be an experienced hunter, dog trainer, competitor, or previous German Shorthaired Pointer or Vizsla owner to be a great Nosam home.

Some of our families hunt. Some participate in AKC Hunt Tests, NAVHDA, conformation, or dog sports. Others simply want an active, well-bred GSP or Vizsla companion to share everyday life with.

What matters to us is finding families who understand they're bringing home an active sporting breed, are committed to training and including their dog in their life, and are willing to learn along the way.

How We Match GSP & Vizsla Puppies With Their Families

We don't use a traditional first-pick, second-pick, or third-pick puppy selection system.

Whether your deposit was the first or eighth received does not determine which puppy you receive.

During the puppies' first eight weeks, we're with them every day and can watch their individual personalities, strengths, and traits develop.

When matching puppies with their families, we consider:

• Temperament and confidence

• Energy and activity level

• Natural hunting drive

• Independence and handler focus

• Trainability

• Structure and conformation

• Performance or show potential

• Individual personality

• Your household, experience, lifestyle, and goals

At about eight weeks of age, we use everything we've learned about the puppies, along with our conversations with you, to determine the best overall matches.

Our priority isn't giving someone the puppy they chose from a photograph at three weeks old.

Our priority is sending each family home with the puppy we believe is most likely to succeed in their home and fit what they're hoping to do together.

We make every effort to honor approved sex and color preferences when possible, while prioritizing the suitability of the individual match.

Nosam Kennels reserves first choice from every litter for our breeding, hunting, performance, or show program.

Picking Up Your Puppy in Kentucky

Nosam Kennels is located in Greensburg, Kentucky, where we raise our German Shorthaired Pointer and Vizsla puppies before they join their new families. Puppies generally go home beginning with the first scheduled pickup weekend after they reach eight weeks of age. We strongly encourage families to pick up their puppy in person. Families may drive to us or fly in and take their puppy home. Greensburg is located in Central Kentucky, approximately two hours from both Nashville, Tennessee, and Louisville, Kentucky. For families who cannot travel to us, delivery options may be available and can be discussed in advance.

We'll provide scheduled pickup options well in advance so you have time to make travel arrangements and prepare for your puppy's arrival.

A lot happens behind the scenes during your puppy's first eight weeks.
