Spyro was bred here at Nosam Kennels and has become one of the most influential females in our program. From the beginning, she showed exceptional bird ability, biddability, and an eagerness to work with her handler. As her career developed, she proved those early qualities through hunt testing, real-world hunting, and eventually through the generations she has produced.

In the field, Spyro is the kind of dog that makes hunting enjoyable. She has an ideal range for the foot hunter, naturally staying connected while still having the confidence to reach out when asked. She showed remarkable steadiness from a young age and required very little training to understand her job around birds.

Retrieving has always been one of Spyro’s strongest qualities. She lives to retrieve, is a confident swimmer, and will go after anything she is sent for on land or water before delivering it cleanly to hand. She works seamlessly alongside other dogs, backs naturally, and has always been an exceptionally cooperative hunting partner.

Spyro earned her NAVHDA Natural Ability Prize I at just seven months old. She went on to earn her AKC Junior Hunter and then her AKC Senior Hunter with four clean passes in four attempts. Her accomplishments are backed by a pedigree filled with NAVHDA Versatile Champions, Master Hunters, Dual Champions, and generations of proven working dogs.

Her ability was never limited to organized testing. Spyro was an important part of our guiding string and one of our go-to dogs when we simply needed to get the job done. She is steady, dependable, easy to handle, and can work productively alongside other dogs and different hunters. Those qualities matter to us as much as the letters behind her name.

Spyro is a smaller liver roan female weighing approximately 45 pounds and standing 22.5 inches tall, well within the breed standard. She is athletic and well muscled with good bone, balanced structure, and a beautiful coat.

Her temperament may set her apart most. Spyro has one of the softest, sweetest temperaments of our Shorthairs. She is affectionate, easygoing, and happy to settle at home, but the moment it is time to work, she is all business. That combination of sensitivity, cooperation, drive, and a reliable off switch has made her an incredibly enjoyable dog to train, hunt over, and live with.

Perhaps Spyro’s greatest contribution to Nosam is now evident in what she has produced.

She is the mother of Rage and Draco, two dogs who have gone on to prove themselves across field, performance, and conformation venues. She is also the grandmother of our AKC Champion Fallon. Seeing Spyro’s biddability, working ability, temperament, and trainability continue through multiple generations has made her an important foundation female within our breeding program.

​

Spyro represents exactly why we believe a breeding dog should demonstrate more than potential. She proved herself in testing. She proved herself hunting. She proved herself as a dependable everyday companion. Now she is proving herself as a producer.

Needless to say, Spyro has already left a lasting mark on Nosam, and her influence will continue well beyond her own generation.
