TRAITS WE BREED FOR

Every breeding at Nosam is planned with the next generation in mind. We aren't looking to produce one exceptional puppy by chance; we want consistent traits that make a German Shorthaired Pointer or Vizsla enjoyable to hunt behind and live with.

We select for dogs that demonstrate the qualities we want to continue seeing generation after generation:

• Natural bird drive and pointing instinct

• Cooperation without sacrificing independence

• Trainability and a willingness to work with their handler

• Natural retrieving ability and confidence in water

• Athletic, functional structure and stamina

• Stable temperament and an off-switch at home

• Consistency and predictability within our lines

The goal isn't simply to produce a dog that can hunt. It's to produce the kind of dog you'll want to hunt behind for years.

PROVEN BEFORE WE BREED

We believe breeding dogs should demonstrate more than potential.

Nosam dogs have been proven through AKC Hunt Tests, NAVHDA, conformation, and other performance venues, with dogs earning titles from Junior Hunter through Senior Hunter and NAVHDA Natural Ability prizes.

But testing is only part of how we evaluate our dogs.

We hunt and have guided with our dogs, giving us the chance to see them work in situations that can't always be recreated in a test. Time in the field shows us how a dog searches, uses the wind, handles changing cover, works with its handler, finds birds, retrieves, and maintains the stamina and desire to keep hunting.

Titles give us valuable information. So does actually hunting behind the dogs we're breeding.

We use both when making decisions about the next generation.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A COMPETITION HOME

Some of our favorite homes simply want a great bird dog.

Maybe you spend your fall chasing grouse and woodcock.

Maybe it's quail, pheasant, or chukar.

Maybe you want a dog beside you in the dove field.

Or maybe you've always wanted to hunt over your own pointing dog but don't know where to begin.

That's okay.

We're interested in homes that will give these dogs opportunities to use the ability we've worked to preserve, not just experienced handlers.

WE WANT MORE NOSAM DOGS IN THE FIELD

That's why we support owners who choose to hunt, test, and title their dogs.

Performance & Title Incentives

Nosam owners may be eligible for incentives for completing designated hunting, performance, and/or conformation titles with their dogs.

These programs are designed to make getting involved a little easier and to encourage owners to get out there and do something with their dog.

More importantly, we'll help point you in the right direction.

We'd rather help another owner get started than have someone assume these sports aren't for them.

HOW WE MATCH HUNTING PROSPECTS

We don't choose puppies based solely on color or which puppy catches someone's eye first.

We evaluate our puppies as individuals as they develop, and we match them around eight weeks.

For hunting homes, we want to know what you're actually looking for.

Tell us:

What do you hunt?
How often do you hunt?
What kind of terrain do you typically hunt?
Are you looking for an upland dog, water work, or both?
Do you want to participate in NAVHDA or AKC Hunt Tests?
Is this your first pointing dog?
What does your dog's life look like outside hunting season?

The more we know about the job you're asking your dog to do, the better we can consider those needs when evaluating the litter.
