A Guide to Creating a First Aid Kit for Dogs

Draco on a hunt. He injured his foot but we were able to push through due to having our medical kit on hand. The vet wrap saved the day and he was able to complete the hunt without issue.

As responsible pet owners, ensuring the safety and well-being of our companions is paramount. Just like we have first aid kits for ourselves, having a tailored first-aid kit for our canine friends is essential. In this guide, we'll walk you through the must-have items to include in a dog first aid kit to be prepared for any unexpected situation that may arise.

Why Your Dog Needs a First Aid Kit

Accidents can happen at any time, whether at home, during outdoor adventures, or even on a routine walk. Having a well-equipped first aid kit for your dog can make a significant difference in providing immediate care before veterinary assistance is available. It can help stabilize your pet's condition and potentially prevent a minor injury from escalating into a more serious health issue.

Essential Items for Your Dog First Aid Kit

  • Gauze, Vet Wrap, and surgical tape: These are vital for covering wounds or providing support to injuries. Make sure to include both self-adhering bandages and sterile gauze pads in various sizes to cater to different wound sizes. Vet wrap can be picked up at any local farm store.

  • Vetericyn Plus Dog Wound Care Spray, Iodine, saline, Chlorhexidine, and or Antibiotic ointment: Used to clean and disinfect wounds, cuts, or scrapes before bandaging, keeping infections at bay. Flush eyes with saline if needed etc.

  • Bandage scissors, suture scissors, Tweezers & Clippers: These tools are handy for cutting bandages, removing debris from a wound, or trimming your dog's fur around an injury.

  • Vet Info: Include your veterinarian's contact information, as well as the nearest emergency veterinary clinic, to have quick access in case of an emergency.

  • Muzzle: In stressful situations, even the most well-behaved dogs may become anxious or agitated. Having a muzzle or cone can help prevent your dog from biting or licking at an injury. If you don't want to pack around a muzzle keep a slip lead handy. In a pinch, a slip lead can be used to muzzle a dog quickly.

  • Peroxide & Activated Charcoal These can be used to induce vomiting under the guidance of a veterinarian in cases of ingestion of toxic substances. When activated charcoal is ingested, it binds to toxins in the gastrointestinal tract and prevents their absorption into the body. This makes activated charcoal an ideal treatment for dogs that have ingested poison or toxins. In an emergency, a veterinarian may recommend using 3% hydrogen peroxide to make a dog vomit.

  • PLEASE talk to your vet about how to use these correctly before you use them.

  • Dog sling/bag: For the ability to carry out an injured pet if you are far away from your car or home and your dog is unable to walk.

  • Stapler, super glue, and or Suture kit: to close wounds. I prefer the stapler I find it the easiest to use when out in the field. There have been a few times when we were hunting and we had to get wounds closed up ASAP and we weren't near a vet who was open at the time.

  • Emergency leash/ Rope

  • Benedryl: If your dog is having an allergic reaction to a bug bite or something in the environment this can come in handy. Ask your vet about the dosage and how to use it first. Write the dosage and information on the bottle so you remember.

  • Styptic Powder: Quickly stops bleeding

  • Collapsible bowl

  • towel

  • extra water

Additional Tips for Your Dog First Aid Kit

  • Regularly Check and Replenish: Ensure your first aid kit is always stocked and items are not expired. Check the contents periodically and replace any used items promptly.

  • Customize for Your Dog: Consider any specific health conditions or medications your dog may be on when assembling the first aid kit.

  • Know How to Use the Items: Familiarize yourself with the items in the kit and how to use them properly. Training in basic first aid for pets can be invaluable in emergencies.

So, there you have it – the essential items to include in a first aid kit for your beloved dog. By being prepared and having the necessary supplies on hand, you can provide prompt care and potentially save your pet's life in critical situations.
